Chiesa di S. Silvestro

Although reshaped several times in the course of history this church still preserves its original Romanesque structure: massive walls, few sources af light, all absence of decorations and frills. It was built in 1110 and it is one of the oldest documented buildings. Its construction was commissioned by Corensio and Leone, sons of Pietro who are sculptured in low relief nest to the Archangel Gabriel on the portal tympanum. The church was built in a short period of time and was consecrated in 1114 by the Bishop Giovanni De Ferrara. Its facade, finished in smooth ashlar, has a pointed shape. The arch of the plain portal rests on two small sculptures representing an ox (iconography of St. Luke) and a lamb (symbol Christ). The keystone of the arch bears the coat-of-arms of the Labinis, the patron family of this church. The beautiful two-light mullioned window has unfortunately disappeared from the facade and was replaced in the 18th century with a common window. domed bell tower. The inside of the church features one nave and two aisles, following building rules for basilicas. The nave ends in a semicircular apse and is wider than the two aisles, whose one-light windows are no longer visible as they were closed during restoration works in the 18tH century. It was also during those works that original truss roof of the nave was covered with a frescoed barrel-vault. Both aisles have a cross vaulted roof. The original flooring was also replaced in 1850 with beautiful majolica tiles still visible today. The high altar is dedicated to St. Sylvester, whereas the side altars are consecrated to Our Lady of birth-giving and to St. Anne, whose wooden 18th century statue was moved to its original lacation, the Church of St. Francis of Assisi. Through patronale, noble families, such as the Barone, de Tacculis, Perrese, de Melioribus and Labini families, had the privilege to approve or not approve the appointment of the parish priest. In 1936 they resigned this privilege, notifying the bishop in office, Andrea Taccone. This church is today under patronage of the parish of the Crucifix.
